The pulp and paper process is a vast consumer of water. Waste water streams are usually treated on site before they are returned to the rivers or lakes.
Much like the water treatment plants used to process domestic waste, paper mills largely utilize the similar technology of aerobic treatment to remove the contaminants from mill water. An aerobic treatment plant uses a primary treatment process of screening and sedimentation followed by an a secondary treatment involving aeration and final clarification.
