Washing and Screening
An alternative technique to the washing process is the flotation method. This process uses chemicals introduced during the repulping operation to promote the flocculation of the ink particles and the formation of foam. The grey stock is then aerated at low consistency (0.8%-1.2%) in a series of flotation cells. This causes the flocs of ink particles to rise to the surface where they are skimmed off. Typically 6-10 flotation cells are set up in a series. Flotation method is particularly effective on high clay content paper. Some qualities of pulp that contain low soluble contaminants from waxed and glued papers require additional procession through disperging. Disperging will crush these contaminants beyond visibility. This is normally done in a disperger, a unit similar in operation to a disk refiner where the stock is fed in at high-consistency and elevated temperature. The acceptable stock is now ready to be cleaned in a series of cyclonic cleaners and screens before going on to be further processed.
