Recovery Boiler
The recovery boiler is the heart of the entire chemical recovery process. From the concentrator, the heavy liquor is sprayed through injection nozzles located along the boiler side walls. As the dissolved organic materials burn, the heat passes up the inside walls of the boiler where it heats the steam condensate in the tubes of the superheaters. Modern mills additionally preheat feed water by the exhaust gases in a pre heater or economizer located in the exhaust stream of the boiler. As the water rises up the wall tubes, it continues to pick up heat until it turns to steam. Saturated steam is collected in the steam drum located at the top of the boiler. Wet or saturated steam can be taken off the drum for a variety of mill uses. Drying of paper in the mill, steam heating digesters, flash evaporating black liquor to concentrate solids, and even domestic plant heating requirements are some of the uses.
