Kraft Process
The two principle chemical pulping processes are the alkaline or sulphate process and the acidic or sulfite process. The sulphate or ‘Kraft’ process dominates the chemical pulping methods due to its advantage in the area of chemical recovery and pulp strength. Over 85% of the worldwide production of chemical pulp is done with the sulphate process. The acidic process has been on a steady decline since 1960. Nonetheless, sulfite mills have their proponents as the pulp is brighter and easier to bleach and refine than Kraft white pulp. Sulphate pulps also produce a very distinct odor from originating from mercaptans that aren’t released in the process. This prevents sulphate processing in populated areas.
