Chemi-Thermomechanical Pulping
The Chemi-thermomechanical pulping process (CTMP) adds another essential step to wood chip processing. As a modified TMP process, it uses a moderate amount of chemical impregnation during the steaming process, which has a positive effect on the pulp bonding properties while it reduces the amount of fiber reject on fiber debris. Sodium sulfite at 1-5% by weight is introduced into the steaming vessel and the chips are heated for 2 to 10 minutes at 120º - 130º C. The resulting pulp of brighter quality and is very suitable for newsprint and white tissue paper processes. Fibers leaving the chips refining stage still require processing before being suitable for papermaking.
